We’ve used empathy, research and our design skills to create a service for you. We understand your challenges and we want to deeply understand your business because we care about it as much as you do. And although we provide accountancy services, we don’t consider ourselves as just ‘accountants’. We’re so much more than that. We’re business advisors, designers, tech aficionados, marketers, humans. Ultimately, we help people build the business of their dreams, and it just so happens that accounting is a part of that!
Who are we a good fit for?
Our clients are innovators. Business owners who want to do things differently. Non-conformists who challenge the status-quo and believe in better. They also want to understand their numbers better and need an accountant who’s proactive, who communicates in plain English and who’ll help them grow their business. Business owners who want more than just ‘compliance work’. They need an accountant who’ll challenge them to think differently, to reinvent the ‘way things are done’.
Here's what you'll get
If you don’t know where you’re going, how are you going to get there? And yet many businesses don’t have a plan – they just turn up every day and hope that the business will grow. That’s a recipe for disaster. We help our clients visualise their goals and ambitions, design and implement a strategy to achieve them, and then create the reporting tools that enable measurement of performance.
Let's face it, everything is online nowadays, so it makes sense that your accounts should be too. We'll help you choose the best software for your business, then set it up & show you how it works. All of which we'll do in plain English, jargon-free, so you'll understand exactly what's going on! Not keen on using online software? Then I guess we're not the accountant for you.
Accounts & Tax
You’ll see a lot of accountants talk about doing ‘compliance work’. That’s their ham-fisted way of saying that they will ‘help’ you comply with your legal obligations to file accounts and tax returns. These things need to be done, and done well, but a modern accountant should be more proactive and helpful than that. It’s basically jargon, used by unhelpful bean-counters, who will be replaced by robots before too long.
Winner of Xero's Small Firm of the Year 2020
We’re so humbled to be Xero’s Small Firm of the Year 2020. It means so much to the team and we know it’s going to help our cause so much. Back in 2017, we set up Ashton McGill with the aim of truly helping people. Helping them build better businesses, helping them build more purposeful businesses, helping them achieve their big, audacious goals. Two years on, and we’re so proud of the community we’ve grown and the wonderful communities we’re a part of. We feel truly lucky to work with such amazing people every day and receiving this award has really solidified our sense of purpose. We’re so excited for everything that’s to come and to help more businesses achieve incredible things.
Like the sound of this but want to know more? We thought so. We’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions to help you.
Can you help us raise finance?!
Yes! We’ve got a tonne of experience when it comes to raising finance. The market for funding has changed a lot over the past few years, but there’s still money out there to support the right businesses. We’ll help you craft a compelling proposition, and with us as your accountants they’ll be biting your hand off to give you money!
Tax makes my head hurt!
We know, why do they have to make it so complicated?!? But that’s what we’re here for. We’ll help you understand what you need to know and then advise you on the best way to manage your finances. Not sure about something? Just ask!
What expenses can I claim?!
We could write a whole website about expenses! The main thing to ask yourself is this – is the expense wholly, necessarily and exclusively for business purposes? If the answer to that question is yes, then you can claim it. If the answer is no, then you may still be able to claim for some of it. If you’re not sure, best give us a call.
What the hell is a P&L!?
Unless you’ve studied accounting, the first time you see a P&L can be a daunting experience. But fear not! We’ll help to take the mystique away. We’ll explain in plain English what it all means and why things are laid out the way they are. We’ll also setup your accounting system so that the reports are tailored to you, not just a generic setup for any old business!
Sounds amazing, but how much will this all cost?!
At Ashton McGill, we’ll never take a one-size-fits-all approach. Before we can give you a quote, we need to have what we call a Discovery Call. This helps us understand the unique needs of your business and how we can help you. We’ll explore your software options, what level of monthly support you want from us, and things like tax returns. Once we’ve captured that information, we’ll then be able to give you a monthly cost for supporting you. That way, you get a fixed fee and you know exactly what we’re both going to do. Simples! (But if you’re just looking for someone to do your accounts cheaply, we’re not the right people for you!)
What happens if we need more work from you?!
We get it. Things change. From time to time you might need help with things like raising finance, making acquisitions, maybe even selling your business. Or just good old-fashioned strategy and business planning. We can do all of these and more. Where we can, we’ll quote you a fixed fee which we’ll agree with you before any work is done.
